Can I Study Biomedical Engineering with OND SLT (Direct Entry)?

This question has a twin. Candidates, who wish to use Direct entry admission to be offered  Biomedical Engineering or Technology are asking too: can one use lower or upper credit for direct entry admission having got an Ordinary National Diploma (OND) in SLT?

Well, I will provide comprehensive but succinct answers to the two questions in this post.

Biomedical Engineering/Technology and its Naming Variances

While candidates may popularly know this course as Biomedical Engineering/Technology, a few universities refer to it with different terms. Hence this post will not only see the term as Biomedical but assume you're looking for the variances as being used by other universities.

Therefore, the course named differently by universities offering it:

  1. Biotechnology e.g ABUAD, ANCHOR-UNI, ARTHUR-JARVIS, BAZE, BELLS, BOSU, CRAWFORD, DOMINION, EBSU, ELIZADE, EVANGEL, FED-DUTSE, FED-NDUFU, FUTA, FUTO, GOUU, GREENFIELD, KASU, MAUTY, MC, IBRU, MCPHERSON, MOUNTAIN TOP, NILE, SALEM, TRINITY-UNI, UNIKINGS, WESTERN-DEL
  2. Applied Biology and Biotechnology e.g. WESLEYUNI
  3. Genetics and Biotechnology e.g.  CALABAR, AKSU

Gaining Admission into Biomedical Engineering with Science Laboratory Technology

First, is it possible to gain admission for Biomedical Engineering/Technology with SLT?

The answer to this question is YES.

Some universities offer admissions into Biomedical Engineering through DE with either OND or HND in Science Laboratory Technology (SLT). This seems more perfect than trying to seek DE admission into Nursing with the same SLT. While SLT is an engineering course, Nursing is medical/clinical science.

Universities Offering Biomedical Engineering (and Referring to it the same)

  1. Afe Babalola University Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State (ABUAD)
  2. Achievers University Owo, Ondo State (ACHIEVERS)
  3. Bells University of Technology Ota Ogun State (BELLSTECH)
  4. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN)
  5. University of Lagos (UNILAG)
  6. Technical University Ibadan (TECH-U)
  7. Federal University of Technology, Akure (FUTA)
  8. Federal University of Technology, Owerri (FUTO)

However, not all these universities are accepting direct entry candidates with SLT (at least officially)

Universities Accepting Science Laboratory for Biomedical Engineering/Technology

Official JAMB brochure has the following conditions and terms for Direct Entry admissions into any of the universities offering Biomedical Engineering.

1. University of Ilorin, Ilorin Kwara State

University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) accepts candidates with Ordinary National Diploma (OND/ND) in Biomedical Engineering or other relevant engineering disciplines with a minimum of Upper Credit and a minimum of one-year post qualification industrial attachment may be considered for admission into a 4-year degree programme.

With the phrases or other relevant engineering disciplines, it means including Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).

The university also accepts candidates with Higher National Diploma (HND) at Upper credit Level in Biomedical Engineering may be considered for admission into the 300 Level of the programme and, must have at least 1-year post qualification experience.

2. Federal University of Technology Uyo, Akwa Ibom State

Federal University of Technology Uyo (FUTO) accepts candidates with ND/HND at Upper Credit level in Biomedical Technology, Biomedical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Electrical and Electronics Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering.

JAMB brochure may be silent about Science Laboratory Technology (SLT). The course is equally an engineering course. Hence, should be considered related or equivalent of any other engineering courses except Agric engineering.

The university also accepts First Degree (BSC) in Engineering or health sciences.

3. Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State

Federal University of Technology, Akure, Ondo State (FUTA) accepts OND with a minimum of Upper Credit Level or its equivalent in Biomedical Technology or related discipline.

By the "related discipline", it means other engineering courses especially or including Science Laboratory Technology (SLT).

Other Universities Not Officially Detailed in Brochure as Accepting SLT for Biomedical Engineering

Looking at the list of the universities above, only the three universities accepting SLT are UNILORIN, FUTA, and FUTO. However, this doesn't mean other universities most especially the privates here listed are not accepting SLT.

My contact with the likes of ABUAD, ACHIEVERS, and BELLSTECH gives the impression that those universities are ready to accept you into their Biomedical Technology with Science Laboratory - in fact with a lower grade such as lower credit.

Gaining Admission With Lower/Upper Credit or Distinction From Polytechnic (OND/HND)

To seek admission into any university, candidates have four choices of grades to use. You
can present Pass, Lower Credit, Upper Credit, or Distinction. But, are all universities accepting lower grades?

Absolutely NO.

I had covered a few courses in the past that candidates with HND or OND can opt-in for with lower grades. Among which are:

Meanwhile, to seek admission for Biomedical Engineering/Technology, you will be limited to UPPER CREDIT - whether you possess the Higher National Diploma or National Diploma.

Checking through the universities accepting SLT into Biomedical Engineering (as detailed earlier), none is accepting a grade lower than UPPER CREDIT except the private ones (but not made official).

However, Upper Credit may not guarantee your admissions in certain situations. In that case, your best bet is DISTINCTION. If you're an upper credit holder, you stand an 80% of chance to be offered admission through DE, while candidates with Distinction stand about a 90% chance (my personal thought).

However, you should consider the following factors in measuring your chance.

  1. How competitive is the course at the university? Universities such as UNILORIN are highly subscribed. UNILORIN has remained one of the most competitive universities in the past 8 years.
  2. How many candidates are seeking admission through Direct Entry compared to provisions for DE applicants? A few universities prefer bringing more candidates into the course through UTME rather than Direct Entry. Hence, limiting DE admission chances.
  3. How often does the university consider DE admission for the course compared to UTME admission? In fact, a few universities won't just consider DE admission for certain courses no matter what. If that will happen, they will make it known on the official JAMB brochure.

All these conditions will determine if your upper credit won't be sidelined if the universities can find more than required distinctions candidates.

    1. There are but not very common. Try private and less competitive state universities. For the Federal, less likely.
