Can I Write Just 5, 6 or 7 Subjects in WAEC, NECO, NABTEB?

Number of Subjects/Papers You Can Register in WAEC

The officially accepted minimum number of subjects a student can register in WAEC is 8 while the maximum is 9.

However, English Language and Mathematics have been automatically selected for you because they are compulsory. You are required to select the other subjects or papers you wish to register for in this examination.

NOTE: In WAEC GCE (private candidates), you can sit for a minimum of seven (7), and a maximum of Nine (9) subjects/papers are allowed (English Language and Mathematics inclusive).

But I Saw a Certificate with Just 5 Subjects/Papers on it.

Yes.

This is because the candidate passed only five subjects.

In other words, WAEC will not display subjects with F9 on the certificate issued. If you pass 3, only that will be on your certificate or original result.

RecommendedTop 10 Mistakes to Avoid in WAEC and How To Overcome Them

But I only need five Subjects/Papers to Gain Admission

That's true too.

Yet, you have to register at least 8.

You can be absent from those you don't want/need. Then, they will record "Absent" (ABS) for you there.

Conclusion

Registering and sitting for are not the same thing. You can register for 9 subjects and write only 5, no offense about that. Just be expecting the 5 subjects when your results are released. And if the five subjects are the core subjects to your proposed course in university, polytechnic, or college of education, you have nothing to fear.

However, the school you're writing the exam at will require you to register for at least 8 subjects and if it's WAEC GCE, NECO GCE, or NABTEB GCE, you can go for as less as 7 subjects. If you prefer, be present for the five needed for your admission.

    2. Not certain. You will sit for at least 5. But if you only pass English, they will still release that and issue certificate for only English.

  19. Good day and thank you for the educative blogs.
Similar to the last question, I need only English. So during the maths yesterday in the current WAEC first series, I asked a WAEC staff about the possibility of writing one paper. I was told that it is possible just that only the written subject if passed will be published on certificate. The absent subjects will be hidden, and if the written subject is failed, no certificate will be issued to such candidate.
So I'm reaolving to writing just two subjects. Besides, I'll not be using the result for admission, just to get another certification.
    Could you verify please?
    Thank you.

    ReplyDelete
    Replies
    1. If a WAEC official told you this, then that supersedes my own point. So, nothing to verify again.

    2. Thank you for the response.
But have you seen any scenario to support your opinion or where is the source of your information please?

    3. I'm an education consultant with more than a decade of experiences. Even while filling the form, the form will not submit unless the required number of subjects a selected. If it's possible to register for 1 subject, schools don't need to register their candidates for more than 5 subjects needed for admissions.

    1. You don't need government to study business administration. It's optional .

For Business Administration, you only need Five (5) SSC credit passes including English Language, Mathematics, Economics and two (2) other relevant subjects.

    1. For Law, you need at least C6 in English and at least D7 in Maths. You can combine another results if you don't have one grade in one result. Read the posts below.

  31. Hello sir...I'm an art student. The time we were registering for waec I filled in my preferred subjects ...the school management removed economics and replaced it with igbo language of which I was not aware of the changes.so on the day of the igbo I stayed back at home with the impression that I didn't register for igbo. To cut the story short my name was called in the hall to sit for the paper which I was absent..so on the day of economics exam I went to sit for the exam but my name was not in the register. The invigilator had to call for emergency paper from waec office which I wrote with. Now the question seeking for answer is:does the emergency paper counts?, Will they give me result for economics?
