Students who attended our school but we registered them for SSCE in another school, whose testimonial will they use.. Our school or the exam center?
That was an inquiry by a proprietor who is our client at Techie BEC Konsult. Whether you're a proprietor, a proprietress, or a concerned student, you'll find our response to be the right guide on this matter.
What's a Secondary School Testimonial?
First, to answer this question correctly, we need to understand what a "testimonial" is. By definition, in the context of a secondary school leaver, a testimonial is a formal statement, document, or letter provided by a teacher, principal, or other school authority that typically highlights the student's academic achievements, personal qualities, extracurricular involvement, and overall character.
From the definition above, be attentive to the student's:
- academic achievements,
- Personal qualities,
- Extracurricular involvement,
- Overall character.
The Elephant in the Room
Now, to the issue at hand: some students have attended a school for five to six years of their secondary education, as we have in Nigeria's 6-3-3-4 system. By interpretation, they might have completed their JSS (Junior Secondary School) and SS (Senior Secondary) classes at the former school. However, if that school is not registered (yet) under WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB, the proprietor must take them to another school that has the right to conduct any of the aforementioned SSCE. It's equally possible that some students left the schools where they spent five or six years to attend other schools to write WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB.
In either of the situations above, the school or the students will have to obtain testimonials from the school where the five/six years of secondary education were completed. This is because these former schools are rightly in a position to account for the students' academic achievements, personal qualities, and extracurricular activities during the long years spent there.
Without further stress, we both know that a school where the student spent just a year, a few months, or weeks can't account for all that with the very little time spent together.
How the Last School Can Issue the Testimonial
As a matter of fact, there are situations, we've witnessed, where the last school (where the student spent just a few weeks) would still consider issuing the testimonial. However, there are attached terms.
- It may agree to issue the testimonial to cover just the period spent with it or a year maximum.
- It may agree to backdate the testimonial as if the student spent the six years of his secondary classes with it, provided an agreement is reached on the given terms.
In the case of the former, most organizations (i.e., recipient bodies) won't be fine with that. This is because a few weeks or a year is too short to adequately account for a student. However, if you can agree on the backdating, there is no way the recipient body will know you’ve done that, especially if your SSCE result (WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB) is also issued by the same (last) school.
