List of Polytechnics That Offer Law in Nigeria?

The alternative to going to universities is considering polytechnics. As an art student, you may want to go for a polytechnic instead of the university. But trying to go for Law requires you to know if any polytechnic is offering that.

Are there any polytechnics offering Law - be it Islamic, Common, Sharia, or Civil Law? If yes, what are their admission requirements?

No Polytechnic is Offering Law

Contrary to whatever you might be thinking or hearing, no single polytechnic in Nigeria is offering Law. I've shared similar information in my post.

As a matter of fact, polytechnics are generally not meant to train students for courses like Law, English, Linguistics, History,  International Relations, etc. They are limited to science, engineering, and a few management and arts courses.

Which Law-Related Courses Can You Try?

Sorry to disappoint you that you can't do Law in polytechnics. But there should be alternatives, you asked? You may not be very right about that. There is no single course that is related to Law in polytechnics.

If you still want to consider an arts course in a polytechnic, you may want to look at these top arts courses:

  1. Public Administration (usually available to social science and Arts students)
  2. Library and Information Studies
  3. Local Government Studies
  4. Mass Communication
  5. Multimedia Studies
  6. Office Technology and Management (usually for social science and Arts)

Polytechnics Courses To Do Direct Entry For Law

One of the routes to gain admission into universities is to firstly attend polytechnics and later cross to the university after your ND/HND - though a waste of time. However, if you can't find it easy to gain admission into a competitive university, you might take this path.

If you're interested in Law after your ND/HND by direct entry to university, which is the best course to do in polytechnic to make that possible? Well, let's see a few.

To answer this question correctly, we have to check for a few universities offering Law and what their requirements for direct entry admission are.

Federal University of Oye Ekiti accepts two A-level passes or NCE in two arts subjects and Diploma in Theatre Arts or Mass Communications. The Diploma in this sense includes National Diploma. So, with Mass Communication, you can apply for its DE in Law.

Unfortunately, not very many universities will accept students with ND/HND for Law. In fact, generally, all universities prefer BSc holders who want to cross to Law for their Direct Entry admission.

Where a student holding ND/HND wishes to try, the best grade to try with should be Distinction and familiar courses may include:

  1. Mass Communication
  2. Library and Information Studies/Science
  3. Public Administration

Conclusion

In Nigeria, no polytechnic offers Law, including Islamic, Common, Sharia, or Civil Law, as they focus mainly on science, engineering, and selected management and arts courses. For those interested in Law, pursuing related courses like Mass Communication, Library and Information Studies, or Public Administration at a polytechnic could facilitate a Direct Entry to universities offering Law, though it's rare and highly competitive. Even where a university accepts ND holders in Mass Communication or the likes for Direct Entry into Law, success will generally requires outstanding grades, typically a Distinction.
