SSCE/UTME Subjects for Mass Communication Admissions

When registering JAMB UTME, you may want to consider Mass Communication as a course of choice. Candidates who had completed their NCE, ND, HND, BSC, and some A'level programmes may want to consider the same filling JAMB Direct Entry forms.

After having that in mind, there are universities - offering Mass Communications to SSCE holders. These candidates pick up the JAMB form under the conditions that they have the right WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB subjects for Mass communication together with their readiness to write the correct subject combination in the UTME. Direct entry applicants should consider reading, "Direct Entry Requirements for Mass Communication" instead.

However, not all intending Mass Com applicants are aware of the required SSCE and UTME subjects to make available before chasing the course. 

In this post, I will be giving you not only the general SSCE and UTME subject requirements as stated by Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) but also the specific requirements by certain universities. Where a university is not stating any conditions, specifically, as will be detailed below, it means such universities accept as JAMB wishes.

JAMB General Requirements for Mass Communication Admissions for the UTME Applicants

Below is the list of SSCE subjects required for Mass Communication according to JAMB.

1. For the SSCE results, you need five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language and four (4) other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences in WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB. In other words, candidates must have at least C6 in the required 5 subjects.
2. For the UTME subject combination, you will pick and sit for any three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects.

Specific Universities' Required SSCE/UTME Subjects for Mass Communication Admissions

For most universities, having what JAMB states above should be enough and the right combo. However, others may want the same, more or less as detailed in the list below.

1. Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka also called UNIZIK or NAU requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language and 'O' Level pass in Mathematics. The university requires 'O' Level credit pass in Literature in English.
2. Benue State University (BSU), Makurdi, Benue State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language and 'O' Level pass in Mathematics. The university requires 'O' Level credit pass in Literature in English.
3. Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, Kwara State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Government, and Literature in English.
4. Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye, Ogun State require five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and two (2) additional subjects in Arts and Social Sciences.
5. Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, Lagos State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and two (2) additional subjects in Arts and Social Sciences.
6. Redeemer's University (REDEEMERS), Ede, Osun State equire five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and two (2) additional subjects in Arts and Social Sciences.
7. Imo State University (IMSU), Owerri, Imo State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English and 'O' Level pass in Mathematics
8. Crescent University (CUAB), Abeokuta, Ogun State requires 'O' Level credit pass in Literature in English,  History/Government, Economics.
9. Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, Ebonyi State requires 'O' Level credit passes in Literature in English, English Language, and Mathematics and 'O' Level pass in a Nigerian Language will be an advantage.
10. Godfrey Okoye University (GOUU), Enugu, Enugu State requires 'O' Level credit pass in Mathematics.
11. Benson Idahosa University(BIU), Benin City, Edo State requires 'O' Level credit pass in Mathematics.
12. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Kwara State states that candidates must obtain at least credit pass in FIVE (5) subjects at S.S.C.E. O/Level or approved equivalent, including English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and any other two (2) subjects; one from Arts and the other from Social Sciences. 
13. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Kaduna State requires  Five 'O' level credit pass in English Language and Mathematics, Government/History, and any two of Arts or Social Science Subjects.
14. Bowen University (BOWEN), Iwo Osun State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics, and any other subjects in Arts and Social Sciences.
15. Western Delta University (WESTERN-DEL), Oghara, Delta State accepts five (5) 'O' Level credit passes including English Language, Literature in English, Government, and any other Social Sciences subjects. 
16. Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ipo/Ikeji-Arakeji Osun State requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes including English Language, Literature in English and a minimum of 'O' Level pass in Mathematics
17. Adeleke University (AUE), Ede Osun State requires 'O' Level credit passes in at least six (6) subjects, including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics obtained at not more than two (2) sittings.
18. Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Delta State requires SSC or GCE 'O' Level credit passes in at least five (5) subjects, including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics, two Social Science subjects.
19. Afe Babalola University (ABUAD) Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State, for Media and Communication Studies, requires 'O' Level credit pass in Mathematics.
20. University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos State requires Five 'O' Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Literature-in-English and any two of Economics, History/Government, Geography, any Nigerian Language, CRS/IRS, and Civic Education.
21. Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba, Kogi State requires five (5) credit passes at SSC or equivalent in English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and any other two (2) Arts and or Social Science subjects.
22. Crescent University (CUAB), Abeokuta, Ogun State 'O' Level credit pass in Literature in English will be an added advantage.
23. Mountain Top University (MOUNTAIN-TOP), Makogi Oba, Ogun State states that candidates must have obtained five credit passes at one sitting or five credits passes at two sittings at the 'O' Level/Senior Secondary Certificate (WAEC; NECO, etc.). Such credits must include English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics, and two other relevant subjects.
24. Plateau State University (PLASU) Bokkos, Plateau State requires credit in Mathematics and Literature in English.
25. Pan-Atlantic University (PAN-ATLANTIC), Lekki, Lagos State requires five (5) SSC credit passes to include English Language, Literature in English, and Government.
26. Edo University, Iyamho (EUI), Edo State requires five (5) credit passes at SSC or its equivalent in English Language, Mathematics, and any other three (3) Social Science subjects at not more than two (2) sittings.
27. Lead City University, Ibadan, Oyo State requires 'O' Level credit passes at SSC or its equivalent in English Language and any other four (4) Social Science subjects.
28. Rivers State University(RSUST), formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Rivers State requires 'O' Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two (2) subjects.
29. Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State requires five (5) SSC credit (or its equivalent) including English Language, Literature in English and Mathematics, and any two (2) subjects.
30. Bayero University Kano(BUK), Kano, Kano State requires five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language and 4 other subjects in Social Sciences.
31. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State accepts five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include  English Language, Literature in English, Mathematics and two other subjects from Social Science/Arts.
32. Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna, Kaduna State requires  Five 'O' level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Literature in English and two other subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.

Specific Universities' UTME Subjects Combination For Mass Communication Admissions

While you should still remember the general UTME subject combination as prescribed by JAMB, stated under the first section above, below is the subject combination some of these universities accept apart or aside from the general one.

1. Adeleke University (AUE), Ede Osun State requires Literature in English.
2. Bowen University (BOWEN), Iwo Osun State requires Literature in English.
3. Kogi State University (KSU), Anyigba, Kogi State requires Literature in English and any other two (2) Arts or Social Science subjects
4. Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria Kaduna State requires the Use of English, Government/History and any other two of Geography, Economics, Literature in English
5. Western Delta University (WESTERN-DEL), Oghara, Delta State requires Literature in English and any other two (2) Social Sciences or Arts Subjects.
6. Joseph Ayo Babalola University (JABU), Ipo/Ikeji-Arakeji Osun State requires Literature in English.
7. Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, Delta State requires any three (3) from Arts or Social Science subjects.
8. Kwara State University(KWASU), Malete, Kwara State requires Mathematics, Literature in English and any other subject.
9. Bayero University Kano(BUK), Kano, Kano State requires any three (3) subjects from Social Science subjects.
10. Mountain Top University (MOUNTAIN-TOP), Makogi Oba, Ogun State requires Literature in English and any other two subjects from social sciences, sciences and Arts.
11. Pan-Atlantic University (PAN-ATLANTIC), Lekki, Lagos State requires any relevant subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
12. Rivers State University(RSUST), formerly Rivers State University of Science and Technology, Port Harcourt, Rivers State accepts Economics, Government and any other subject.
13. Federal University Oye Ekiti (FUOYE), Ekiti State requires any three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Science.
14. Bingham University (BINGHAM), Abuja requires Literature in English.
15. Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba Akoko (AAUA), Ondo State requires three (3) Arts or Social Science subjects.
16. University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), Ilorin, Kwara State requires Literature in English, Either IRS/CRS, History, Yoruba, and one subject from Social Science like Government, Economics or Geography.
17. University of Lagos (UNILAG), Akoka, Lagos State English Language, Literature-in-English and any two subjects from Arts or Social Sciences. The University also accepts Mathematics as a UTME subject.
18. Coal City University(COAL-CITY), Enugu, Enugu State requires Literature in English, Government or History, any Arts or Social science Subjects.
19. Kaduna State University (KASU), Kaduna, Kaduna State requires  Any three subjects in Arts or Social Sciences.
