Is Hospitality Management a Science, Social, or Art Course?

Candidates who want to choose Hospitality Management in the JAMB UTME or Direct Entry application are curious to know if the course is a science, commercial (social science/management), or art. There is a need to know the faculty or the school that Hospitality Management falls to before making a decision whether to choose it, especially when the change of institution/course forms opens and candidates wish to consider less competitive courses.

Before we dive into the core of this post, let's get a few things.

What's Hospitality Management?

Hospitality management is the study of business and administration of hotels, restaurants, cruise ships, amusement parks, destination marketing organizations, convention centers, country clubs, restaurants, casinos, resorts, airlines and tour agencies, and many more.

Hospitality Management is sometimes referred to as Hotel and Catering Management which involves learning the management techniques that are applicable to hotel administration, marketing, housekeeping, maintenance, catering, etc. Unlike the hospitality industry, hotel management focuses more on the hotel industry and its functioning.

In Nigerian institutions, for instance, Hospitality Management may be combined with other related courses. This determines how the course is named by the university, the polytechnics, or colleges. Below are possible variations of the naming:

  1. Hospitality and Tourism e.g. ARTHUR-JARVIS, EKSU, KWASU, UNIHEZ
  2. Hospitality and Tourism Management e.g. CRUTECH, FED-OYE EKITI, FED-WUKARI, FUNAAB, KWASU, IMSU, PAUL, PHC
  3. Hotel and Catering Management e.g. NOUN
  4. Hotel Management and Tourism e.g. ELIZADE, BIU, FED-WUKARI, GREGORY, UMUDIKE, UNI-AFRICA, WESLEYUNI

With that said, is the course Science, Commercial, or Art?

Hospitality Management is a three-in-one Course

I bet your best choice would be the Commercial, Social Science or Management course. After all, the course is about business, management, and administration of businesses of hotels, events, etc.

Sorry to disappoint you, but Hospitality Management is Science, Commercial, and/or Art.

This post will break it down for you. A section will give a few universities offering Hospitality Management, their UTME subjects, and SSCE subject requirements. With this, you should be able to know under which school, college, or faculty the course is categorized. The other section will give a few polytechnics offering the course and their admission requirements - detailing whether that polytechnic considers it as a Science, Commercial, or Art course.

These are just a few universities to establish that certain universities will accept strictly science students, or both Science and Commercial, and in certain cases Science, Art, and Commercial.

Even where a polytechnic listed Commercial subjects as acceptable O'level requirements, the UTME subject combination (as stated above) will still hinder him/her.

      Conclusion

It's safe for non-science (Commercial and Art) students to seek admission into Hospitality Management - provided he writes the correct subject combination in both UTME and SSCE. However, it is more likely that the candidates that will be favored are more Science than Commercial/Art. This is because Science students will generally combine the right subjects in UTME and in O'level results.
