Admission Requirements For Computer Engineering

When you decide to choose Computer Engineering in UTME/DE registration, you have one or two of these universities for consideration. However, the next question will be what are the requirements for its admission.

What is the admission requirement for Computer Engineering?

These requirements should include

  1. the JAMB UTME subject combination
  2. the SSCE or O'level subjects
  3. the Direct entry qualification and grades

In this post, I will be breaking these down. You will see the Direct entry requirement, the UTME requirement, and the O'level requirement for Computer Engineering.

Official JAMB Requirement For Computer Engineering

In the JAMB brochure, the board has listed the following as its official requirements for Computer Engineering.

  1. Direct Entry: (i) Three (3) A'level passes in Pure Mathematics or Pure and Applied Mathematics, Chemistry, and Physics. ii. ND/HND at Credit level in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering. iii. First Degree in Physics, Mathematics, Computer Science, and Engineering. iv. Very good passes in three JUPEB subjects namely Chemistry, Physics, and Mathematics.
  2. SSCE Subjects: Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Mathematics, Further Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, and English Language.
  3. UTME Subjects: English, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry.

With the stated requirements, you should be fine with almost all the universities offering Computer Engineering. However, some universities may be friendly or tense in demand.

This is why an in-depth look into the specific requirements of each university will be more helpful.

Universities' Specific Admission Requirements for Computer Engineering

I've studied all the universities offering Computer Engineering - Federal, State, and Private.

Here is my finding!

All of them comply with the exact requirements stated officially by JAMB. Hence with the above-stated qualification, you're good to go. However, the direct-entry applicants may need to out further if their proposed university accepts IJMB, JUPEB, A'level Cambridge, NCE, ND, HND, or BSC depending on their own qualification being used to chase the 200/300 level admission.

The specific direct entry requirements for computer engineering admission in Nigeria may vary depending on the university. However, in general, the following are the requirements for direct entry admission into computer engineering in Nigeria:

  1. Candidates must possess at least two A-level passes in Mathematics and Physics, and any other science subject such as Chemistry or Biology.
  2. Candidates must have a minimum of five O-level credits, including Mathematics, English Language, Physics, and any other science subject such as Chemistry or Biology.
  3. Candidates must have a JAMB Direct Entry form, which is obtained from the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB).
  4. Candidates must participate in a Direct Entry Screening Exercise conducted by the university or polytechnic of their choice.
  5. Candidates must have a good grade point average (GPA) in their previous academic qualifications.
  6. Before the proposed university will start releasing the admission lists, applicants should request to forward their transcripts to the university.

Important Information For SSCE/UTME (100-level) Applicants

The admission requirements for Computer Engineering in Nigeria through the Senior School Certificate Examination (SSCE) usually include the following:

  1. Candidates are required to possess a minimum of five credits in relevant subjects, including Mathematics, Physics, English Language, and any other two science subjects such as Chemistry, Biology, or Further Mathematics.
  2. The minimum acceptable grade for SSCE is usually a Credit pass, although some universities or polytechnics may require higher grades.
  3. Candidates must register and sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) organized by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB). They must select Computer Engineering as their first choice of course and meet the JAMB cut-off mark for the course.
  4. Candidates are also required to participate in a Post-UTME screening exercise conducted by their preferred institution. The screening exercise may include written tests, oral interviews, or both.
