UTME and O'level Subjects For Banking and Finance (Polytechnics)

As for admission for Banking and Finance in polytechnics, candidates must be sure they:
  1. Write correct four subjects in their UTME
  2. Possess the 5 compulsory subjects in their WAEC, NECO or NABEB (at least)
  3. have the required subjects and grades in at least two sittings are generally accepted among the polytechnics in questions
  4. drawn JAMB or school cut-off mark

About this Post

  1. This post is divided into two parts. The first part compares the subjects JAMB requires of you in SSCE with what individual polytechnics demand. The second part compares the subjects JAMB requires in UTME with what individual institution requires.
  2. In either case, what your proposed institution demands supersede that of JAMB.
  3. I refer to the polytechnics offering Banking and Finance by their acronyms or alias here e.g IBD-POLY, FEDPOLY-OFF, etc. If you don't understand what each acronym stands for, come back here and click this link to see their full names and addresses.
  4. The polytechnics are the official accredited and approved institutions as detailed by the JAMB official brochure.

JAMB's and Individual Polytechnic's SSCE Subjects For Banking and Finance

JAMB states that candidates must have at least five (5) SSCE credit passes in English Language (not Literature in English) and Mathematics and any three (3) subjects from the following: Economics/Commerce, Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Literature in English, Geography, Office Practice, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Physics, History/Government, Typewriting, Shorthand

However, some polytechnics ask for more or less. Details below:

  1. FEDPO-OKO requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes at two (2) sittings or four (4) 'O' Level credit passes at one (1) sitting.
  2. IBD-POLY requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes to include Economics, Mathematics and English Language. It also accepts Yoruba and CRS\IS as part of course requirements.
  3. FEDPOFFA, OSUNPOLY, WUFPOBK, and FEDPONAM offer the course as Financial Studies.
  4. IBD-POLY requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings. Also requires as UTME subject Mathematics, Economics/Principles of Accounts/Commerce.
  5. LASPOTECH does not accept Literature in English as a course requirement.
  6.  PH-POLY require five (5) 'O' Level credit passes including English and Mathematics and any three (3) subjects from the course requirements at not more than two (2) sittings. It excludes History.
  7. RAMATPOLY accepts five (5) 'O' Level credit passes including English and Mathematics and any three (3) subjects from the course requirements at not more than two (2) sittings.
  8. OTEFE does not accept History.
  9. FEDPO-EDE requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes or its equivalent in English Language Not Literature in English, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce and any other two (2) subjects from the following Business Method/Business Studies, Geography, Government/History, Civic Education/Social Studies, Insurance, Principles of Account/Book-Keeping, Biology/Agricultural Science/Animal Husbandry/Health Science/Fishery/Physics/Chemistry, and Marketing.
  10. FEDPO-NEK requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings which must include Mathematics, English Language, and three (3) other relevant subjects.
  11. OSUNTECH requires five (5) 'O' Level credit passes at not more than two (2) sittings. Economics and Commerce are accepted as different course subjects. Literature in English not accepted as a course requirement.
  12. KWAPOLY does not accept History but accepts 'O' Level credit pass in Statistics.
  13. YABATECH requires Five (5) O' Level credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Economics and any other two (2) subjects from the following: Commerce,  Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Literature in English, Geography, Biology/Agricultural Science and History/Government.
  14. FEDPO-ILA accepts 'O' Level credit passes in English Language (not Literature in English), Mathematics and any three subjects from the following: Economics/Commerce, Business Methods/Business Studies,  Principles of Accounts/Book Keeping, Literature in English, Geography, Office Practice, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry/Physics, History/Government, Typewriting, Shorthand, Civic Education, Financial Accounting, French, Insurance, CRS/IRK, Marketing, Salesmanship, Store Keeping, Store Management, Computer Studies, Entrepreneurship Education and Social Studies.
  15. FEDPO-BAU requires five (5) 'O' level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce and any two (2) subjects from Business Methods, Principles of Accounts, Literature in English, Geography, Office Practice, Biology/Agricultural Science, Chemistry, Physics, History/Government, Typewriting and Shorthand.
  16. AUCHIPOLY requires that the number of credit passes should include Mathematics, English Language, and Economics/Commerce/ Principles of Accounts.
  17. IMO-POLY accepts only Biology or Agricultural Science. Does not accept History and Literature in English as a course requirement for Accountancy.
  18. AAP requires four (4) 'O' Level credit passes to include English Language, Mathematics, Economics/Commerce, Financial Accounting, Government, Statistics and Geography as programme requirements.
  19. OKE-OGUN POLY accepts Civic Education in lieu of Government and requires 'O' Level credit pass in Economics.
  20. OSUNPOLY - in addition to the programme requirements accepts 'O' Level credit passes in Civic Education/Government, Data Processing/ Computer Studies/ICT. It also accepts Economics and Commerce as separate subjects.

JAMB and Individual Poytechnic's UTME Subjects For Banking and Finance

JAMB states that candidates must write English, Mathematics, and any two (2) of Economics, Geography, History, Government, Commerce, or Principles of Accounts.

However, some polytechnics require more or less as detailed below:

  1. FEDPO-ILA accepts Mathematics and any two of Economics, Geography, Government, Commerce or Principles of Accounts.
  2. FEDPO-BAU requires Mathematics and any two (2) subjects from Economics, Commerce, Government, Geography, Principles of Accounts, and History.
  3. YABATECH requires English Language, Mathematics, and any other two (2) subjects from Economics, Geography, History, Government, Commerce, and Principles of Accounts.

JAMB and School Cut-Off Marks For Banking and Finance

JAMB usually declares particular cut-off marks for polytechnics. For public-owned polytechnics, it's usually from 120 and above. For the private polytechnics form 110 and above.

There is no way to be specific about the cut-off mark of each of the polytechnics here. You should check for the post UTME adverts of these schools before you can be sure they accept a specific score from JAMB UTME. This is because some polytechnics, even though announce fewer marks, will still accept higher marks e.g 140, 150, 160 0r above.
