UTME, SSCE and DE Requirements For English in Nigerian

When you decide to choose English in UTME/DE registration, you have one or two of these universities for consideration. However, the next question will be what are the requirements for its admission.

What is the admission requirement for English and Literary Studies?

These requirements should include

  1. the JAMB UTME subject combination
  2. the SSCE or O'level subjects
  3. the Direct entry qualification and grades

In this post, I will be breaking these down. You will see the Direct entry requirement, the UTME requirement, and the O'level requirement for English.

Official JAMB Requirement For English

In the JAMB brochure, the board has listed the following as its official requirements for English.

  1. Direct Entry: Two (2) A'level passes to include Literature in English and one (1) other Arts subject.
  2. SSCE Subjects: Five (5) SSC credit passes to include Literature in English, English Language, and three other Arts or Social Science subjects.
  3. UTME Subjects: English, Literature in English, one other Arts subject, and other Arts or Social Science subject.

With the stated requirements, you should be fine with almost all the universities offering English. However, some universities may be friendly or tense in the demand.

This is why an in-depth look into the specific requirements of each university will be more helpful.

Universities' Specific Admission Requirements for English

I've studied all the universities offering English - Federal, State, and Private.

Here is my finding!

All of them comply with the exact requirements stated officially by JAMB. Hence with the above-stated qualification, you're good to go. Let's check a few examples.

Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State requirements for English is as follows.

Benue State University, Makurdi, Benue State accepts exact requirements.

This is no different from what the American University Of Nigeria, Yola, Adamawa State accepts for its English and Literature.

However, the direct-entry applicants may need to out further if their proposed university accepts IJMB, JUPEB, A'level Cambridge, NCE, ND, HND, or BSC depending on their own qualification being used to chase the 200/300 level admission.

Important Information For Both Direct Entry (200-Level) and UTME (100-Level) Applicants

Admission requirements for studying English in Nigeria may vary depending on the institution you wish to apply to. However, here are some general admission requirements that are usually required:

  1. O'Level Result: Candidates are required to have a minimum of five (5) credit passes in relevant subjects which include English Language and Literature in English.
  2. UTME: Candidates are required to sit for the Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) and score a minimum of 180 or 200 for very competitive universities.
  3. Direct Entry (DE): For Direct Entry, candidates are required to have a minimum of two (2) A-level passes in Literature in English and one other Arts or Social Science subject.
  4. Post-UTME (DE) Screening: Most (not all) institutions in Nigeria require candidates to sit for a Post-UTME/DE screening exercise to be considered for admission. The screening exercise usually involves a CBT test and or online/physical screening for other universities

It is important to note that the specific admission requirements may vary between institutions and it is always advisable to check with the institution directly or their official website for their specific requirements.
