How to Write Non-Pillar Posts and Still Rank 1 on Google

One of the ranking factors used by Google and several other search engines to elevate your posts to page 1 or number 1 of search results is pillar posts. We can all agree that the longer your content, the more likely Google believes you have enough information for everyone searching for certain terms or keywords.

Research had equally buttressed this view. More on that in the post.

Lucky you, if you can write a dozen of pillar posts. This can easily make way for you in the ever-competing content-driven world.

You can use my method in the, "8 Best Techniques to Write Unique and Evergreen Posts" to find ways to get out of content blocks or dry out of content ideas.

If however, you're like me, you'll find this post as a companion. It's your best guide if you easily get tired of writing 5,000 words all in the name ranking.

Some bloggers will keep repeating the same words in their posts because they just want to achieve pillar content. This will not help. Rather, it backfires, as Google has confirmed they punish writers who spam with keyword repetition.

And if readers find out, you're wasting their time, they will bounce back to better resources out there. I hope you understand the effect of such a user experience. You may like to see how Google uses users' experience as her number 1 ranking factor.

If you can't write a hundred pillar-page content, does that mean you shouldn't blog? Doesn't that mean this world of content writing and marketing is not for you? Do you have to quit and let those who can pour out a thousand words on a topic take the show?

Well, I have good news for you. With your few words, you can still rank #1, or at worst, be on page 1. You just have to follow, to details, of what I'm about to share. These approaches had been adopted by very many bloggers and they worked fine for them. I had sincerely used these and are working for me to date.

Especially in certain niches, you may not have much to say if you're restricted to what certain laws or clauses state. You won't need to say just anything because you're targeting 3000 words in your post. So, what do you do instead?

1. Look for the Uncovered Ground

No matter how much people had put down on a field or niche, there will still be an uncovered or not-yet taken space. Of course, those who had written pillar posts on certain topics may likely rank higher.

If you can't beat them, don't join them.

The first assignment to achieve beating them is to take a look at what others have written. While going through their works, see if there's anything they're missing. Check if there's anything they don't explain in detail. See if there are confusing terms. Jot those key things down. Then, create your own posts around them. If they rank higher than you for the main posts, when their readers want more explanations on what they've not covered or explained in detail, search engines will bring your posts up for them.

2. Talk Basics

Most blogs ahead of you are likely not talking about the most basic things any longer. Do you know why? They now have a bigger audience and they may not want to be competing with the newcomers. Hence, they focus their energy on complex topics in their niches.

Most of them will love talking about trending topics. Their old and basic articles are left untouched and have never been edited in the last year. They want to be in the show, hence they forget where they've come from.

Here is your chance to jump in and win. Google and other search engines love fresh content. They prefer showing a post that's a week older to searchers to a post that's 2 years old. Unless a 2-year-old article is updated recently and with fresh information, Google may not rank it as higher as those newer ones.

You can be among the new ones with basics.

If Google is not doing this, it means those new writers will never be ranked. Search engines will compensate newer writers. This is why you still achieve ranking even if you're just joining us a few months ago. There's literally nothing you want to write on that someone has not posted before. Then, why have you eventually ranked even ahead of those old posts? See Tactics to Outrank Authority Blogs in the Same Niche and Keywords.

The answer is simple - your content is fresh and search engines love fresh vegetables.

More importantly, write basic. Let searchers; that are new to the topics enjoy your words and help you rank. Once they love yours, you're on top dude!

3. Simplify Your Posts

Similar to going basic is to simplify your posts. Readers are generally in a hurry. They want answers to their questions almost immediately. How can you help?

Many who are focusing on pillar posts will never go simple with their posts. They want to prove their knowledge of the topics. They want to give you a research report. Then, how do they ever go simply?

You can win them by bringing things down.

A better way this can be achieved is to go for the "Questions and Answers" approach. Your posts can just provide direct answers to readers' questions. Write a post of about 10 questions and provide short but comprehensive answers to each.

This may also help you win more Google featured snippets. This rank your posts number "0"; which is a point ahead of the number 1 ranking.

Some searchers will look for direct answers to their concerns. These people are not interested in reading a whole lot of stories. They just want answers in a few lines. They can help you rank higher if you win them.

I lay more emphasis on this strategy and more on "Make Your Posts Rank When Others Have Written Them". Take a peek!

4. Summarize Other People's Posts

What most searchers do is look around for different authors' views on a topic. They read several posts on the same queries. Their intention is to know if anything will be different among these authors.

What if you can summarize these well-known authors' works in just one post and present it to your readers? You will win more views and a higher ranking if you post content with reference to the views of the top 10 authors on a particular topic.

With these topics or anyone similar, there is no doubt that searchers will love to read that instead of individual professional posts or tech reviewers' posts.

5. Use Readers Pool

It's true that we can do research to find out what readers truly want to read. One way to achieve that is keyword research. I recently shared my 2 most favorite FREE tools to find what I should write on.

However, content writers can devise a means to collect answers directly from their existing and prospective readers. These people are ready to tell you what they like to read or see next.

You can leave a pool by the side of your page to collect answers to a few basic questions. This will give you ideas of what to write on.

Since they ask for it, they will love to see it written no matter how short the post is. And interestingly, if a few of your existing readers ask for it, a million others out there are looking for the same.

Conclusion

Writing pillar posts will be forever recommended by SEO experts. However, a few writers had made their way up to page 1 or number 1 on Google without pillar content. All they did was one or two of the tactics explained here.

Do you know any other methods to rank number 1 or page 1 on Google search results without necessarily writing pillar posts? Have you achieved a better ranking utilizing any of the methods here? Do you think using these methods will not make any difference? Share your experience. Leave a comment below.
