SSCE/UTME Subjects for Performing/Theatre Arts Admission

While seeking admission into the universities, polytechnics or colleges of education offering Theatre and Performing Arts, one area to consider checking is the requirements of the subject from any available O'level/SSCE e,g WAEC, NECO, GCE, or NABTEB. Another requirement if you seeking a full-time admission through JAMB is the subject combination right for Perfoming Art in UTME.

Starting with that will give you some confidence that you're on the right path. For if you misstep at this stage, you may still lose the admissions even with 355 in JAMB and outstanding performance in the post UTME/screening.

Whether you're seeking admission through UTME or Direct Entry, below is what you must know about the subjects and grades you should have in WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, or GCE as well as the subjects you're expected to pick and sit for in the UTME.

JAMB General O'level Subjects for Theatre/Performing Arts Admissions

Generally, JAMB requires candidates seeking admission for drama or dramatic arts to possess at least five (5) SSCE/O'level credit passes to include English Language and Arts subjects.

In other words, it's the English Language that's compulsory for performing art, other 4 SSCE subjects can come from relevant art subjects such as Literature, Government, CRS/IRS, etc.

If you satisfy that, don't rejoice yet because some universities may be choosy and indifferent thereby stating specific subjects they want from you if they're your choices. And those universities' specifics supersede that of JAMB.

General JAMB Subject Combination for Theatre Arts Admissions

Candidates seeking Theatre Arts admissions must pick and write English, Literature in English, and two (2) other relevant subjects in JAMB UTME. JAMB is not specific about the other two other relevant subjects. They may include Government, CRS/IRS, Yoruba, or any other social science (commercial) subjects.

It is expected of the concerned universities to state their own subject combination in the UTME. However, generally, all the universities offering Theatre/Performing Arts comply with the JAMB general UTME subject combination i.e English, Literature in English, and two (2) other relevant subjects in JAMB UTME

Conclusion

Where a university doesn't state anything contradicting what JAMB requires (as stated earlier), it means such schools agree and go along with JAMB general SSCE requirements.
It's worth noting that across the board, all universities offering Theatre Arts make English and Literature-in-English compulsory in both SSCE and UTME. And for some other universities, for the SSCE, accepts three 3 other O'level subjects can come from either Art or Comercial subjects
