Students, including art and commercial, are silly confused about "Psychology" as they usually don't know if it belongs to the science, commercial, or art discipline or class.
In this post, I'll be answering the question of whether you, as an art or social science student, can study Psychology in university and related concerns.
First, The Background of Studying Psychology
Psychology is the scientific study of the human mind and behavior. It aims to understand how people think, feel, and behave in different situations.
The field of psychology covers a wide range of topics, including perception, learning, memory, motivation, emotion, personality, social behavior, and mental health.
People study psychology for various reasons. Some are interested in understanding human behavior and mental processes, while others want to pursue a career in the field of psychology, such as counseling, clinical psychology, or research. Psychology is also useful in many other fields, such as education, business, law, and healthcare.
Psychology is a Course For Both Art and Commercial Students
Don't let the word "scientific" in the definition above confuse you, Psychology is a course right for art and commercial students. As an art or a social science student, you can study Psychology at the university.
Very many universities, going by their admission requirements and faculties under which Psychology is placed, categorize the course as an art and/or social science/management course. More on this, later in the next section.
Even though the concern of studying a course depends on a few other factors than being an art, commercial, or science student. Even if you're an art or commercial student, without other prerequisites to study Psychology, the course may be out of your reach.

Some Universities Categorize Psychology as a Science Course
Though few, we have some universities that consider Psychology as a Science course. Examples include Adekunle Ajasin University, Akungba-Akoko, Ondo State, Osun State University, Osogbo, Osun State, Covenant University, Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State, etc. These universities require "Biology" at the O'level which is not expected of all art and social science students.
Going by the admission requirements of these universities, we can easily deduce that their own Psychology is for science applicants. In fact, Covenant University, Canaanland, Ota, Ogun State has Psychology under both Art/Social Science and Science Faculty. The university accepts both SSCE and UTME accordingly. These requirements will be talked about next.
JAMB Requires Art and Commercial Subjects For Psychology
The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), apart from English, which is general to all courses, requires any three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Science, in UTME, to study Psychology.
Similarly, as requested by JAMB, the O'level subjects should include five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language, and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
However, where a university considers Psychology a science course, it will ask for different subjects other than that stated by JAMB.
A quick check at three universities, with each representing federal, state, and private respectively, below is the result. After this, I add what the universities that categorize Psychology as a science course requires instead.
1. Alex Ekwueme Federal University Ndufu-Alike (AEFUNA), Abakaliki, Ebonyi State asks for the following.
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
- English, any three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Science
2. Ekiti State University (EKSU), Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State asks for:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
- English and any three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Science
3. Baze University Abuja asks for:
- Five (5) SSCE credit passes in Government or History, English Language and three (3) other subjects. A pass in Mathematics is required.
- English, and any three (3) subjects from Arts or Social Science
- 'Five (5) 'O' credit passes in English Language, Mathematics, Biology and any other two (2) subjects from Science, Social Sciences and /or Arts.
- English and any three (3) subjects from Sciences or Social Sciences,
Conclusion
Even if it sounds "Science", Psychology is not entirely a science course. It's a course opened mainly to art and social science students especially if you have the SSCE and/or UTME requirements for the course.
However, after studying the official JAMB brochure, got through all the universities offering the course, I could pick up a few universities that demand "Biology" as an SSCE subject for Psychology. This has limited their department to mostly science students and to a few lucky art and social science students.
It will be rational on your own part to study the requirement of your beloved proposed university to be sure of their requirements.
