UTME, SSCE & DE Subjects For Nutrition and Dietetics in Nigeria

When you decide to choose Nutrition and Dietetics in UTME/DE registration, you have one or two of these universities for consideration. However, the next question will be what are the requirements for its admission.

What is the admission requirement for Nutrition and Dietetics?

These requirements should include

  1. the JAMB UTME subject combination
  2. the SSCE or O'level subjects
  3. the Direct entry qualification and grades

In this post, I will be breaking these down. You will see the Direct entry requirement, the UTME requirement, and the O'level requirement for Nutrition and Dietetics.

Official JAMB Requirement For Nutrition and Dietetics

In the JAMB brochure, the board has listed the following as its official requirements for Nutrition and Dietetics.

  1. Direct Entry: Two (2) A level passes in Chemistry and any one (1) of Biology, Agricultural Science, Botany and Zoology.
  2. SSCE Subjects: Five (5) SSC credit passes including English Language, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology or Agric Science.
  3. UTME Subjects: English, Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture and one (1) of Mathematics, Geography, Economics or Physics

With the stated requirements, you should be fine with almost all the universities offering Nutrition and Dietetics. However, some universities may be friendly or tense in the demand.

This is why an in-depth look into the specific requirements of each university will be more helpful.

Universities' Specific Admission Requirements for Nutrition and Dietetics

I've studied all the universities offering Nutrition and Dietetics - Federal, State, and Private.

Here is my finding!

Many universities e.g. Bayero University, Kano, Kano State, Nnamdi Azikiwe University, Awka, Anambra State, etc., accept the following order.

  1. DE Requirements: Two (2) 'A' Level passes in Chemistry, Biology and Physics plus the UTME requirement.
  2. SSCE/O'level Requirement: Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language, Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Mathematics.
  3. UTME subject Combination: English, Chemistry, Biology and Physics.

Some universities e.g. Imo State University, Owerri, Imo State want this order.

  1. DE Requirements: Two (2) ‘A’ Level passes in Chemistry, Biology and Agricultural Science, or Physics.
  2. SSCE/O'level Requirement: Five (5) SSC credit passes in Chemistry, Biology/Agricultural Science, Mathematics, Physics and English Language.
  3. UTME subject Combination: EnglishChemistry, Biology/Agriculture and Mathematics/ Physics

A further visit to the official JAMB brochure shows that:

  1. Most universities comply with the exact requirements stated officially by JAMB. Hence with the above-stated qualification, you're good to go.
  2. Universities that call their course "Nutrition and Dietetics" are more likely to accept Biology/Agric or Physics/Mathematics in UTME.
  3. Those who call it "Human Nutrition" will mostly accept Chemistry, Biology, and Physics in UTME.
  4. Universities that add "Consumer Services" to "Nutrition" e.g. Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State will accept English, Chemistry, Biology/Agriculture and one (1) of Mathematics, Geography, Economics or Physics in UTME
  5. However, the direct-entry applicants may need to out further if their proposed university accepts IJMB, JUPEB, A'level Cambridge, NCE, ND, HND, or BSC depending on their own qualification being used to chase the 200/300 level admission.
