NABTEB is No Longer Accepted For Admissions?

I've got calls about this. Some candidates had called me to know if it's true that NABTEB can no longer be used for admissions.

They heard institutions and JAMB had stopped accepting NABTEB for admissions and they wanted some clarification about that.

This post will be answering your questions in the following variances.

  1. Will schools stop accepting NABTEB for admissions?
  2. Will NABTEB be stopped, such that the exam will no longer be in Nigeria?
  3. Are there schools that will still be accepting NABTEB?
  4. Does this affect the candidates who already have NABTEB results or it is the future results that will not be accepted?
  5. If NABTEB will not be accepted for admissions, what of jobs, etc?

There are Two Types of NABTEB, With One Still Being Accepted for Admissions

The news that JAMB and schools had discontinued accepting NABTEB for admission was true but not all NABTEB results or exams were affected.

There is the NABTEB O'level which includes the exams being conducted by the board as May/June school candidates or the GCE version also conducted for secondary school leavers in Nov/Dec.

There is the other NABTEB which is called NABTEB Advanced Level or NABTEB A'level. This is conducted by the same exam body but aimed at candidates who wish to be admitted to the 200-level in universities instead of going through JAMB UTME and starting from the 100-level.

This NABTEB A'level is usually a 9-month course which is equivalent to IJMB, JUPEB, ND, or NCE at the end of the programme.

Candidates use this to seek admissions into relevant courses in their universities of interest without taking UTME and if admitted, starts from the 200 level.

It's the NABTEB Advanced level that is no Longer Accepted for Admissions

It's this A'level version that JAMB has discontinued from being accepted for the JAMB direct entry admissions. And all universities, that were used to accepting it, had been instructed to stop.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board said the National Business and Technical Examinations Board advanced level certificate is not acceptable as an entry requirement for Direct Entry into tertiary institutions.

JAMB is aware that NABTEB is not authorized to offer GCE and is, therefore, compelled to take appropriate action. Any A/L GCE Certificate issued by NABTEB is, therefore, not registrable with JAMB and the Board would not process the admission of any candidate with such a result. Candidates who wish to enlist for A/Level examinations are to note.

In other words, NABTEB May/June and Nov/Dec will still be used and accepted for admissions together with UTME for 100-level admissions just as using WAEC or NECO with UTME to gain admissions. However, those who want to run the Advanced Level of NABTEB, won't be able to use that for JAMB Direct entry admission to seek 200-level admissions again.

Running NABTEB A'level Programme and Conducting its Exams Continue

Just like the O'level version of NABTEB, the board together with affiliated centers will continue running the 9-month intensive course which leads to this A'level certification.

However, the result will be accepted for other purposes such as a job or to study further for professional courses. But unfortunately will not be accepted by universities to process DE admissions.

Related to this is the concern of candidates who had been admitted using the result before now. They don't have to be afraid as this new decision doesn't affect them. They will complete their degree using the NABTEB A'level results. But new students will not be admitted using the same results.
