Polytechnics Offering Pharmacy Technology, UTME/SSCE Subjects

List of Polytechnics Offering Pharmaceutical Technology/Engineering

Pharmaceutical Technology can be confusing sometimes. I’ve seen a student who claimed Ogun State Polytechnic is offering Pharmacy. I couldn’t be but argue till I was able to prove to her the course was not Pharmacy but rather Pharmaceutical/Pharmacy Technology.

Don’t be confused, the courses are not the same. While Pharmacy is a pure medical science that studies the origin, preparation, properties, effects, dosage, and dispensation of medicines, Pharmaceutical/Pharmacy Technology is the application of scientific knowledge or technology to pharmacy, pharmacology, and the pharmaceutical industry.

In this part of the world, Pharmaceutical/Pharmacy Technology is an engineering course rather than life science. We can argue that it deals with the use of machines in the production of drugs.

Pharmaceutical engineers are concerned with the transformation of raw materials into valuable products by chemical, biochemical or physical processes.

List of Polytechnics Offering Pharmaceutical Technology/Engineering

Currently, in Nigeria, we have three polytechnics officially with this course.

  1. Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Owerri
  2. Kano State Polytechnic
  3. Ogun State Polytechnic (Formerly Moshood Abiola Polytechnic)
  4. Edo State Polytechnic
  5. College of Health Technology Ilesa Osun State
  6. Malikiya College Of Health And Social Sciences, Bauchi State
  7. College of Health Technology, Offa, Kwara State

SSCE (O’level) Subjects Required for Pharmaceutical Technology

Five (5) SSC credit passes in English Language and four (4) credit passes in Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics, Biology/Agricultural Science

UTME Subjects Combination Required for Pharmaceutical Technology

English, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physics /Biology.

The subjects above are the general requirement, While English, Mathematics, and Chemistry are compulsory, I advise a prospective admission seeker to choose Physics in UTME instead of Biology as the fourth subject. Most schools will prefer that. Also, it can be easy to change to any other engineering course in case of a change of mind.

Special Requirements

OGUN-POLY requires four (4) O’Level credit passes at one (1) sitting or five (5) credits at not more than two (2) sittings to include Biology, Chemistry, and Mathematics with a pass in English Language and Physics. Agricultural Science is not acceptable as an alternative to Biology.
