Can I Write WAEC, NECO or GCE in SS 1 or SS 2?

A reader sent me this question:

I got a question about writing WAEC or NECO before my final year in secondary school.

I’m at present in SS1 and my school’s proprietor is convincing my parents to obtain WAEC GCE for me. He believed I was brilliant enough to pass it.

Then, if I should obtain the form and pass it, does that mean I don’t have to continue to SS2 or SS3 again?

Can I obtain WAEC/GCE as an SS1 or SS2 Student?

Thanks for your letter and the question.

It will not only help you but open the eyes of other students in your situation.

Answer
In fact, this is the best approach for you whether you’re a brilliant student or otherwise.

I think your school proprietor is doing well by convincing your parents to take this route. I had got a series of complaints that some proprietors would not allow such to happen in their schools.

Why did I say it’s best for you?

In most cases, writing WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB GCE while still in SS1 or 2 will serve as a preparatory test ground for you. And If you win all your papers (or the 5 to 6 needed ones), you’re really a champion.

I personally followed this approach when I was in SS2. I didn’t make my whole 9 papers though. I made 6 and it helped me understand where my strength was and areas of my weakness.

As a result, in SS3, I worked hard on the papers I made in SS2, and harder for the ones I got ordinary passes in.

Needless to say, I cleared my papers at SS3 which was a rare record of my time at secondary school was.

So, go ahead with this if your parents can afford it.

Also, note that you can as well write internal WAEC, NECO, or NABTEB while still in SS1 or 2. In other words, it’s not only the GCE that can be taken in a class before your final year, but you can also take school candidates’ exams too.

Some schools may allow you to take such exams with their candidates in the final year. And where this is not allowed, they can grant you permission to contact other schools that allow that.

I'm aware some schools will not allow that for economic reasons. This was why one of the frustrated parents asked a question on this. WAEC was quick to tell him that, a student in SS 1 or 2 is allowed to write WAEC internal by the exam body.

As regards the question: if you pass WAEC in SS1, do you still have to continue to SS3?...

It’s your choice and decision that matter here.

What you need for admission is 5 to 6 credit passes in your SSCE result. And once you have that, the university doesn’t want to know if you have it while in SS1 or 3.

Therefore, if you’re 15 or 16 of age, you may stop your secondary school journey there and proceed to your university, polytechnic, or college of education of choice.

16 is usually the officially recognized age to obtain JAMB UTME and process admission. If you’re 15, you can add one year to take advantage of that.

If however, you’re less than that, you may need to continue enjoying your kiddo life till SS2 or 3.
I hope this explanation is of help?

    1. Your school may not allow that but it's possible if you register with another school. Also, you can consider GCE instead.
