How Does ABU Give Admission to Its Aspirants?

If you're thinking about getting into Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), you might be curious to know how they decide who gets in and who doesn't.

Some folks have already picked ABU, aced their post-UTME, and are eagerly waiting for those admission lists. They're crossing their fingers and hoping for the best, but they also want to know what factors the university considers when accepting students.

Now, if you've checked the first and second admission lists and your name isn't there, you might be scratching your head, wondering what's going on. You might be asking yourself, "How the heck does ABU decide who to admit?"

Well, let's dive into that topic in this post and have a friendly chat about it. 😊

ABU Admits Based on MCE

The acronym MCE was my invention. I coined it from the modality every federal-owned institution must follow in admitting students. The MCE means:

  1. Merit
  2. Catchment Area
  3. Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS)

If they're not familiar, the comprehensive explanation is in my post, "What is Catchment Areas, ELDS and Merit List?".

1. ABU Merit Admission

Answering your question, 45% of Ahmadu Bello University's admission list will be candidates who meet the admission requirements of the university.

These requirements include:

  1. right JAMB subjects and UTME score
  2. right pass mark in post-UTME
  3. correct O'level subjects and grades and
  4. meeting the departmental aggregate point

If you've met the above, that last one you may not know (as it's not made public), you're automatically on the merit admission list of the university.

2. ABU Catchment Area Admission

35% of ABU admission lists will be for candidates who don't perform up to the per of the candidates on the merit list but fall in some states regarded as the catchment areas of the university.

Kaduna State, Adamawa State, Bauchi State, Benue State, etc. belong to this category. Lucky you if fall into this category of aspirants as with a lower departmental point, you may be admitted.

RecommendedABU 19 Catchment, 23 Educationally Less Dev. States

3. ABU Educationally Less Developed States (ELDS) Admission

Similar to the catchment area, 20% of the admitted students will be based on the candidates applying from educationally less developed states.

The Federal Government and Ministry of Education recognize and recommend Bayelsa, Ebonyi, Jigawa, Zamfara, Adamawa, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Cross River, Gombe, Jigawa, Kano, Kaduna, Katsina, Kebbi, Kogi, Kwara, Nasarawa, Niger, Plateau, Rivers, Sokoto, Taraba and Yobe as the official educationally less developed states.

All federal universities are concerned here though. As for ABU, if you're from any of these states, your chance to gain admission with a lower aggregate departmental point is broader than candidates from other states even with a higher point.

ABU Follows Science/Art Ratio of Admission Quota

Governments want all federal-owned universities to admit more science students than art and commercial. So, for science courses, more students will be admitted than for the art and social science courses put together.

As such, 60:40 is the official ratio. This means for all the admitted students, 60% will be for science courses while the raining 40% will be distributed among the art and management courses.

With this stand, there is more hope to gain admission to ABU if you're a science student than if you're an art/commercial student - especially with less competitive points.

ABU Does Transfer Students To Less Competitive Courses

Another modality that comes into play when offering students admission is the transfer from one proposed course to another. ABU, like many other universities, will transfer their candidates from more competitive courses (they don't meet their points) to other less competitive courses (they meet their points).

So, if you've been waiting for admission but without any green light, you should "transfer admission" which may favor you eventually. All it requires, from your side, is to be checking the JAMB portal transfer approval section.

If transferred, whether you receive an SMS or email to that effect or not, accept it there and change the course to the new course at any CBT center around you. Then, you will be looking forward to the final admission offer of the new course.

Conclusion

it's safe to say that the main criteria the university uses for its admission is Merit. And if you're lucky to fall into the catchments states or ELDS, you're to hope for better too.

Also, the university embraces transferring of aspirants from their proposed courses to other not-too-competitive courses if they don't merit the former.
