Background of Western Union Foundation Scholarships

The Western Union Foundation Global Scholarship Program, also referred to as WU Scholars, is a program designed to support young people and their efforts to pursue a post-secondary education.

Selected scholarship recipients will receive USD $2,500 each to contribute toward tuition or school fees at an accredited post-secondary institution and will be selected based on criteria relating to the program's three pillars: Perseverance, Aspiration, and Community-Mindedness.

The Institute of International Education, Inc. (IIE), a US non-profit, administers the program on behalf of the Western Union Foundation and its contributors.

Terms and Conditions of the Scholarships

  1. Scholarships must be used at an accredited post-secondary institution seeking an undergraduate degree.
  2. All applicants must be pursuing a degree/field of study in one of the following categories: science, technology, engineering, mathematics, and business/entrepreneurship.
  3. All applicants for scholarships must be between the ages of 18 - 26 years of age on June 1, 2019.

Application Closing Date/Deadline

  • Application Period Opens: Friday, March 1, 2019
  • Application Period Closes: Tuesday, April 30, 2019 at 11:59pm EST
  • Selection and Notification to All Applicants: July 2019

Application Requirements and Eligibility

  • Applicants must have gained admission into any of accredited university either home or abroad or at least apply to the school of choice in order to submit an application for this scholarship.
  • The university where the scholarship will be used must be an accredited institution (evaluated by an external accreditation body— sometimes a national government agency or other third-party organization— to ensure certain academic standards are met.)
  • Applicants field of study must fall into one of the following categories: Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics or Business/Entrepreneurship?
  • Applicants must have been offered undergraduate degree admissions or seeking an undergraduate degree. Note that specialized academic programs (study abroad term, stand-alone language acquisition course, service learning, etc.) or advanced degrees (Masters, PhD, JD, etc.) are not eligible.
  • Applicants immediate family member must not be a controlling officer in Western Union, any of its affiliates and non-affiliated nonprofit entities, or its Agents?
  • A teacher or professor must be able to provide a letter of recommendation on your behalf? (If a teacher or professor is unable to submit a recommendation on your behalf, will someone who has supervised you in a youth/community group, volunteer position, job/employment situation, etc. be able to do so?)

Further Clarifications

  • You do not need to be a Western Union customer or use Western Union services to be eligible.
  • You must use the scholarship for tuition or school fees during the academic term immediately following scholarship winner selections (estimated in July). Extenuating circumstances will be considered and must be communicated to IIE for review.
