Predegree Course: Understand Admission into PDS, PD or Remedial Programmes

August 20, 2018

What you must know about Predegree, Remedial, Pre-ND, Pre-NCE Programmes before Obtaining the forms.

Before you obtain a predegree or remedial form of a school, it’s important you understand the basics of the course. You should learn about what is waiting for you after completing such a course.

This post takes you through basics of a PD, PDS, remedial, Pre-ND and Pre-NCE programmes in our universities, polytechnics, colleges of education.

What is Predegree?

In general term, predegree is a preliminary or pre-versity course an admission seeker undergoes before gaining a regular admission to his intended university.

This course is usually conducted by the same university that he seeks admission.

For short, predegree is also called PD (generally for all courses including arts, science and social science) or PDS (if courses are strictly for science students) or remedial (as being termed by some universities).

Polytechnics and Colleges of Education Case

In the case of a polytechnic or college of education, this preliminary course is not called predegree rather, it’s called pre-ND (polytechnic) and pre-NCE (college of education).

This is because, predegree gives you admission to the 100 level of your proposed degree (university) course, whereas Pre-ND and pre-NCE gives you admission to the ND 1 and NCE 100 level of your proposed course in the polytechnic and college of education respectively.

Predegree Admission Requirements (SSCE Grades)

To gain admission into any university’s predegree, Pre-ND, Pre-NCE programme, you must have at least 5 credit passes in your WAEC, NECO and NABTEB in not more than two sittings.

This is the SSCE requirements for admission into any course in Nigeria.

Whereas, in the case of any deficiencies in your SSCE result or if you’re about to write any of WAEC, NECO or NABTEB, you can still obtain a school’s predegree, pre-ND or Pre-NCE form using awaiting results.

By awaiting result, it means, you will obtain the form and work to obtain SSCE exams with hope of getting the required grades.

Generally, all schools allow students to obtain their forms with awaiting result.

After Pre-degree, pre-ND, Pre-NCE Course, What Next?

The pre course is expected to last for one year which is usually a two-semester study and usually completed in 6 to 9 months.

During this course, you will be groomed with regular lectures and tests will be conducted along way. At the end of the programme, you’ll write your final exams.

All these tests and exams will be the benchmarks upon which the school will decide if you will be given admission to the 100 level of your proposed course.

If you fail the test and exams, you end up being denied admission.

Passing UTME as a Perquisite to Admission

Another important factor that may deny you admission is if you fail your Unified Tertiary Matriculation Exams.

Making attempt to gain admission through predegree doesn’t exempt you from writing JAMB UTME. You must equally pass it – by scoring a mark the school requires. Some schools may require 200 for their predegree students (e.g Obafemi Awolowo University), some may consider 180 or less.

In general, universities will accept between 180 to 200 for PD or Remedial students. Polytechnics and colleges of education accept 100 to 150 and above

Your school will be opened as to the mark required for your UTME.

Conclusion

It’s common these days to see predegree as a short-cut to gain admission. But it’s not as simple you might have hope.

Take a predegree course as a way to leave home and get yourself ready for the work ahead in your course but not as a sure-way to admission. Hundreds of students had been eventually denied admissions for not taking the course serious.

Don’t be a victim. Remember, your name is written with pencil when you do predegree course, it may easily be erased.

10 Things You Must Know About Predegree Admission to University

August 20, 2018

Predegree Admission to Universities in Nigeria - Questions and Answers

Are you hearing about predegree course for the first time? Or you know what it is but want to know more? Do you just need a quick answer to a question bothering you about Predegree course? Then here we present, 9 things you must know about predegree admissions to the universities in Nigeria.

1. What is predegree programme?

First, let’s look at what Predegree programme is.

A predegree programme is a one-year course administered by a university to prepare candidates seeking admission to 100 level of any of her courses.

The course is run for two semesters usually not lasing beyond 6 to 9 months of academic work.

2. What are the requirements to obtain the form?

Generally speaking, you need at least 5 or 6 credit passes (depending on your proposed course) in your O’level results e.g WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, NBAIS before you can be given admission to 100 level.

Read: SSCE Results: How to know 5 Compulsory Subjects to Pass for Admission Purpose

That’s why schools running this programme will demand the same for their applicants.

However, some of these schools allow awaiting results provided you’ll be able to present it on or before 100 level admission.

You should check for such details (conditions) on your proposed school’s predegree form adverts for further clarification.

3. Are all Nigerian universities running PD programmes?

No.

But very many of them run the course. These include: Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, Osun State University, Adekunle Ajasin University to mention but a few.

Yet, we have some; including University of Ibadan not involved (at least not yet).

However, some universities don’t call it predegree, rather they call it, remedial e.g University of Ilorin, Ahmadu Bello University, Zaria etc.

Please visit the school's website to check if your interested school is running the course.

4. How much is the PD form of such Schools?

No national price for predegree forms. You will need to check for such price in the advert page of the school.

5. When will the predegree forms be out?

Usually, most universities start selling predegree forms before and during the sales of JAMB UTME form.

Since, JAMB starts sales of form around October yearly, expect sales of predegree form around May - October.

6. When is usually the closing date for the form?

There is no general closing date by universities selling it. You will have to read the closing date in the advert of your proposed school.

Hence, I advise checking their websites to see for yourself.

7. Will I be given admission after completing my course?

Yes, if you pass the course.

Schools want you to pass their tests and final exams for the predegree course before you can be given admission.

They also want you to pass JAMB UTME. By this, you must have at least the JAMB national cut off mark or the cut off mark declared by your school for her predegree candidates.

Only on these conditions you can be offered admission to 100 level.

8. How much is the programme fee?

No general or conventional tuition for the course.

Your school reserves the right to set the tuition and change it anytime.

But you should be preparing between #100,000 to #200,000 for your tuition depending on the schools.

9. Do polytechnics and colleges of education run PD course?

Yes.

But they don't call it predegree rather, it's preliminary (prelim, Pre-ND or Pre-NCE).

Generally, the pre-ND or -NCE is conducted the same as the university predegree programme.

This is well explained in the post, "Predegree Course: Understand Admission into PDS, PD or Remedial Programmes"

10. Do I need to do UTME or Post UTME if I do the programme?

Some schools don't require their predegree students to participate in the post UTME. However, generally all schools compulsory buying UTME form and partaking in the JAMB UTME.

Some schools require the two for their predegree students e.g Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife, University of Ilorin, Adekunle Ajasin University.

You should find out the modalities being used by your proposed institution.

No by pass for JAMB UTME unless you consider A'level programmes like IJMB, JUPEB, NABTEB Advanced, Cambridge Advance etc.
