WHAT ARE REQUIRED TO BECOME ICAN STUDENTS AND MEMBERS

Basically, when you apply for ICAN, you will be provided with the student's handbook. The guide below will be contained therein. However, you don't want to wait for a handbook before you know what is ahead of you and make your decisions as rightly.

The Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN) is a professional accounting body that offers different levels of membership to individuals who have met its admission requirements. The levels of membership include:

  1. Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) membership
  2. Professional Examinations (PE) membership
  3. Associate membership
  4. Fellow membership

1. Accounting Technician Scheme (ATS) Membership

  1. A minimum of five (5) credits in the Senior Secondary School Certificate Examination (SSCE) or its equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics.
  2. Candidates must complete the ICAN ATS programme, which consists of three stages: Foundation, Skills and Professional.

2. Professional Examinations (PE) Membership

The PE membership is for individuals who have completed a recognized academic program in accounting or a related field. The requirements for admission into the PE membership are:

  1. A degree from a recognized university or polytechnic.
  2. A minimum of five (5) credits in the SSCE or its equivalent, including English Language and Mathematics.
  3. Completion of the ICAN Professional Examinations, which consist of three levels: Knowledge, Skills, and Professional.

3. Associate Membership

The Associate membership is for individuals who have completed the ICAN PE programme or have an equivalent qualification from a recognized professional accounting body. The requirements for admission into the Associate membership are:

  2. A minimum of three (3) years of relevant work experience in accounting or related field.

4. Fellow Membership

The Fellow membership is the highest level of membership and is reserved for individuals who have made significant contributions to the accounting profession. The requirements for admission into the Fellow membership are:

  1. Admission into the ICAN Associate membership.
  2. A minimum of ten (10) years of relevant work experience in accounting or related field.
  3. Evidence of significant contribution to the accounting profession.
