WHAT EVERY PROSPECTIVE APPLICANT SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THE NATIONAL INSTITUTE OF MARKETING OF NIGERIA (NIMN)

I recently posted, "Answers to Students' Questions on National Institute of Marketing of Nigeria" to answer 5 commonly asked questions about NIMN. Yet, there's a need to open things up in detail for an intending applicant or member.

After reading the piece below, you should understand in detail - the requirements to become a member of NIMN, the guidelines for different activities, and the body's syllabus.

NIMN Examination Structure and Exemptions

The Nigerian Institute of Marketing of Nigeria (NIMN) is the regulatory body for the marketing profession in Nigeria. NIMN conducts professional certification exams for its members and prospective members.

NIMN Examination Structure:

The NIMN professional certification examination consists of four levels:

  1. Certificate in Marketing (CIM)
  2. Diploma in Marketing (DipM)
  3. Professional Postgraduate Diploma in Marketing (PGDM)
  4. Fellowship in Marketing (FNIM)

Each level of the examination builds on the previous level, and it is designed to test the knowledge and competence of candidates in various areas of marketing. The examination covers topics such as marketing management, consumer behavior, marketing research, product development, pricing strategies, and promotion.

Exemptions:

NIMN may grant exemptions to certain candidates who meet certain criteria. Exemptions are granted based on the following:

  1. Qualifications: Candidates with relevant academic qualifications may be granted exemptions from some levels of the NIMN examination. For example, candidates with a relevant degree may be exempted from the Certificate in Marketing (CIM) examination.
  2. Professional Experience: Candidates with relevant professional experience may be granted exemptions from some levels of the NIMN examination. For example, candidates with several years of experience in marketing may be exempted from the Certificate in Marketing (CIM) and Diploma in Marketing (DipM) examinations.
  3. Other Professional Qualifications: Candidates with other relevant professional qualifications may be granted exemptions from some levels of the NIMN examination. For example, candidates with professional qualifications in advertising may be exempted from some parts of the NIMN examination.

NIMN: How to Apply for "Exemptions"

Candidates applying for exemption should obtain and complete the Exemption form and return same to the Secretariat with the appropriate exemption fee(s). Candidates will be notified of the exemption(s) which they have been granted.

To apply for exemptions from NIMN professional certification exams, candidates must follow these steps:

  1. Review the NIMN Exemption Policy: The first step is to review the NIMN exemption policy to determine if you are eligible for any exemptions. The exemption policy outlines the criteria for granting exemptions and the documents required for application.
  2. Gather Relevant Documents: Candidates must gather all relevant documents to support their application for exemption. This may include academic certificates, professional qualifications, and evidence of relevant work experience.
  3. Complete the Exemption Application Form: Candidates must complete the NIMN exemption application form, which can be downloaded from the NIMN website. The form requires candidates to provide personal information, details of their qualifications and work experience, and the level of the examination they are seeking exemption from.
  4. Attach Supporting Documents: Candidates must attach all relevant documents to support their application for exemption. This may include academic certificates, professional qualifications, and evidence of relevant work experience.
  5. Submit Application: Once the application form and supporting documents have been completed, candidates must submit their application to the NIMN Secretariat. The application can be submitted by post or in person.
  6. Wait for Response: NIMN will review each application on a case-by-case basis and make a decision based on the information provided. The institute will inform candidates of the outcome of their application within a reasonable time.

It is important to note that NIMN may require candidates to undergo an interview or additional assessment to determine their eligibility for exemption. Candidates should also ensure that they meet all other requirements for membership or certification, such as payment of membership fees or completion of relevant training programs.

NIMN Date of Examination and Examination Entry

The Examination of the Institute is held twice each year in June and December. All Examination entry forms must reach the National Secretariat with bank draft or tellers for the appropriate fees on or before the final day of close of entry.

However, a concession may be given for deferment of the examination if there is a written notice to this effect and supported with cogent reasons by the candidate which must be received at the secretariat not later than three weeks before the commencement of the examination.
